Fishing Report

Written by Jeff Cooke

COLORADO:  Back in Vail for another Summer, looking forward to some great fishing in the Vail and Roaring Fork Valleys.

Lower Roaring Fork: CFS 1080  9 out of 10 Clarity: Great  The Fork is exceptional this time of year and this season is no different.  Drakes, Sallies and PMD's OH MY!  Soft Hackles, Princes, Sallies and Golden Stones, Girdles act as your weight; Red Copper John's, Halfback PMD's, STD's, BLM's, and PT's are your realistic patterns and suspend under a large hopper style pattern.  Call in sick, then call Will Sands at Taylor Creek Fly Shop ( for more info.

Upper Colorado River: CFS 803 LOW  7 out of 10  Clarity: Great    Running a bit lower than normal, we've been seeing bigger fish over the past 3 weeks.  Streamers and deep nymphing have produced the best results with the dry bite picking up every day.  Foam cicadas in black, natural (I know right) ThingamaHoppers,  Chernobyl Ants in orange and natural colors on the top, some 5x tippet connecting everything down to meatier BH SH PT's, Hare's Ear's, Prince's etc etc.  Top it off with a realistic, smaller point fly like a size 20-22 RS2 in gray, Fire Bug brand size 18 zebra midges in a variety of colors, Barr's emergers size 18-22 or even a Micro May in 18-22.

Eagle River:  CFS 225 LOW  MIDGES ARE HERE!  'Nuff said about that.  The annual midge emergence is on along the entire upper Eagle, midge souffle, scrambled midge, popcorn midge, pickled midge....but I digress.  Patterns:  1. Midges  2. Midges  3.  Midges  Seriously:  18-22 UV Midges in green, gray, black; 18-22 RS2's in gray, black and natural (tie some in green if you want hint hint hint ;) Rojo Midges size 18-22 green.  For a different bite, short line nymph pocketwater with your midge patterns suspended by a low riding caddis or hopper imitation, these fish will surprise you on top!  We've been seeing the most active bite in years this season with larger browns JUMPING while being fought and RISING more than in previous seasons.

Homestake Creek: Homestake Creek is in blue sky mode, general attractor dries like PMX and Elk Hair Stimi's tethered to Nate Reynold's NS2's and soft hackles PTs, red or Fire Bug brand zebra midges in green, red, orange and black with a purple bead.

Saltwater Trips

Dennis with his first permit! El Pescador, BelizeWading a saltwater flat in warm sunshine just off a tropical island in the winter is enough said. MEXICO and CUBA and BELIZE have been the favorite saltwater destinations for Cookie for several reasons. Both locations are known for plentiful bonefish and year round resident permit and tarpon. Mexico is relatively easy to get to from the States plus the local people are friendly and welcoming.   Mexico is a great location for trout folks to get a solid introduction into saltwater fly fishing.  For more experienced saltwater anglers, Cuba offers a plethora of sight casting opportunities for bones and is a year-round permit and tarpon fishery.  Belize is the place to find your fish of a lifetime.  The supermodel of all species, the Permit, has been sought after by generations of fly anglers looking for answers, frustration, satisfaction and fulfillment.

 More to come soon.....
